Gaggenau may be the world’s oldest appliance company. Founded just outside Germany’s Black Forest in 1683, Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden started Gaggenau as a hardware and home goods manufacturer. He took advantage of the valley’s vast iron deposits and in turn brought wealth to the community, establishing a foundation that would secure the company’s fortune for centuries.
Industrialization Sets In
With the onset of the Industrial Revolution came sweeping changes to production at every level. Gaggenau built factories to make agricultural machinery and tools. Eventually, they developed an enameling process that was used to give their signage division an edge in the market. This enameling process would later grow into a trademark quality of their ovens and stoves.
The Gears are Shifted
In the early 20th century, Dr. Otto von Blanquet takes over the reins at Gaggenau and shifts focus to appliances, electric stoves, and even bicycles. They also improve the efficiency of their gas and coal appliances. He is followed by Georg von Blanquet who sees a future of highly customizable, stylized appliances in every home. He shifts focus again and the new line of products becomes a hit. Gaggenau’s name becomes known throughout the world for quality and style.
Preparing for the Future
Appliance technology changes rapidly from the ‘70s to the new millennium, yet Gaggenau continues to lead many of those advances. They take inspiration from American designs and release an elegantly subdued side-by-side fridge/freezer combo. They learn from aerodynamic research to develop super-efficient ventilation systems that take advantage of the Coanda effect. And recently, they used their insurmountable expertise to sweep the iF Design Awards in 10 categories, every one they had been nominated in. Without a doubt, Gaggenau has earned its fame as one of the industry’s, maybe even history’s, superior manufacturers.
