Whirlpool Refrigerator Dispensing No Water and Leaking? The Water Inlet Valve Is Usually the Cause (Model WRS571CIHW01)

If your Whirlpool refrigerator has two problems at once, no water from the dispenser and a leak somewhere on the unit, the most likely cause is a failed water inlet valve.

Why No Water Plus a Leak Points to the Inlet Valve

• No water: the solenoid coil burns out or loses continuity, or mineral buildup clogs the valve, so it never opens and nothing reaches the dispenser.
• Leak: the plastic valve body cracks under constant line pressure, a seal wears out, or sediment holds the valve partly open, so water keeps escaping and drips near the lower rear of the unit.

What You Can Safely Check First

If you are comfortable doing so, these steps are safe and can limit water damage while you wait for service:

1. Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker.
2. Turn off the water shutoff valve that feeds the fridge to stop the leak.
3. Wipe up standing water and check the water line and its connections at the back for obvious damage.
4. Look for a cracked valve body or a wet spot near the lower rear panel.

From there, leave the rest to a professional. A trained tech confirms the diagnosis by testing the valve’s solenoid coil for continuity, then replaces a part that is both plumbed and wired.
