Microwave Repair

The Whirlpool microwave door error, which may appear as “Door” or “Open/Close” on your microwave’s display, is a common issue with some models. It can sometimes be resolved with simple troubleshooting steps, which we’ll walk you through in this guide.

However, the error can also be caused by a faulty door switch that may need to be replaced. If that’s the cause, you can either replace it yourself by following the instructions below or call in a professional to do it for you.

How to Fix a Door Error on a Whirlpool Microwave

Let’s start by looking at some simple fixes that can sometimes resolve this problem before moving on to the more complex repair of replacing a door switch.

1. Open and close the door

This is the simplest fix, but it may not be the solution for you if you’re having so much trouble that you’re seeking answers using this guide.

However, it’s helpful to know for future reference that this error can appear when you open and close the microwave door but don’t run the appliance within 5 minutes.

To clear this error, simply open and close the door again, and then run the microwave.

This safety feature is designed to prevent someone from accidentally running the microwave unintentionally, perhaps by brushing against the buttons when the door is closed. The feature requires you to re-open and close the door before starting, ensuring the operation is intentional.

2. Check the door isn’t obstructed

Packaging materials, oversized containers, plates or dishes, or other objects can sometimes block the door, preventing it from closing properly. Even a small misalignment of the door caused by these items can trigger a door error.

Therefore, ensure no items are obstructing the door and that it closes securely without resistance each time you use your microwave.

3. Clean the door contacts

Cleaning the metal contacts located around the door frame and on the door itself can often resolve a Whirlpool microwave door error. These contacts are part of a sensor system that ensures the door is properly closed by completing an electrical connection when the door meets the microwave body.

Use a damp, soapy cloth to clean the metal lip and contacts at the bottom, the contacts on the sides, and the sensors at the top of the frame. This helps ensure a solid electrical connection when the door is closed.

Additionally, cleaning the door latch and hinges to remove any dirt or grime buildup can further improve functionality and reduce the likelihood of door errors.

4. Ensure the microwave is level

Your Whirlpool microwave must be placed on a flat, level surface to avoid door errors. If the microwave isn’t level, the door may close unevenly, potentially preventing the door sensors from making proper contact or causing the door to misalign with the latch and switches.

This misalignment can trigger the error if the microwave’s safety sensors detect the door as open even when it appears closed.

5. Check the door latch and hooks

If the door latch mechanism is faulty, it can result in a door error. To check the door latch, open the door and examine the slots on the microwave frame where the door’s hooks insert.

Look for any visible obstructions, debris, or damage in the slots. Slowly close the door and listen for a clicking sound, which indicates that the latch is engaging properly.

If the door doesn’t click or close securely, the latch mechanism inside the frame may be faulty and may need to be replaced.

Next, open the door again and inspect the hooks that protrude from the door. Are any of them bent, misshapen, or cracked? Gently wiggle the hooks to ensure they’re not loose.

If the hooks are damaged or loose, they’ll need to be replaced.

6. Replace a faulty door switch

If you’ve gone through all of this guide’s steps so far and you’re still experiencing a persistent “door” error, a faulty door switch is the most likely cause. This problem is common with some Whirlpool microwave models. To resolve this issue, you’ll need to replace the faulty door switch.

Follow these steps to replace a faulty door switch on your microwave:

  1. Unplug the microwave for safety.
  2. Remove the screws securing the grill at the top of the microwave. Then, lift off the grill.
  3. Remove the screw holding the control panel in place.
  4. Lift the control panel up and tilt it forward, exposing the wires behind.
  5. Take a photo of how the wires are connected to the control board. Then, disconnect the wires and set the control panel aside.
  6. Remove the screws securing the insulation panel behind the control panel’s location. Remove the insulation panel and set it aside.
  7. Remove the T20 screw securing the top interlock door switch to the frame. Then, using a flathead screwdriver, gently push the switch inward and upward through the hole in the frame to release it. Carefully lift the switch out of the microwave housing.
  8. Remove the tension spring from the switch assembly, and then detach the black switch from its white mountain bracket.
  9. Take a photo of how the wires connect to the switch, then disconnect the wires.
  10. Set your multimeter to continuity mode, touch one probe to the COM terminal and the other to the NO terminal, then press the switch; continuity (a beep or reading) should appear when pressed and disappear when released.
  11. If the switch is faulty, replace the door switch.
  12. Repeat this process for all of the door switches.

Final Consideration

The steps above should resolve your Whirlpool microwave door error. However, if you haven’t been able to fix the error or don’t feel comfortable performing some of the steps yourself, don’t hesitate to contact a professional to inspect and repair the issue for you.
