How To Change The Water Filter in a LG Refrigerator

If you have an LG refrigerator, you will need to change the water filter every six months. This tutorial will show you how to do it. It’s a pretty simple process, but there are a few things you’ll need to know beforehand. So, without further ado, let’s get started!

What filter do I buy?

LG recommends changing your water filter every six months. They also recommend using an LG brand water filter. These filters are specifically designed to work with your refrigerator and using a water filter with a third-party manufacturer could void your warranty!

LT1000P Filters

In door filter

To change your in-door filter:

  1. Turn off the water line to your refrigerator.
  2. Make sure your old filter is completely empty. Do this by dispensing all the remaining water until the flow stops completely.
  3. Place a towel beneath the water dispenser to catch any drips or spills.
  4. Open the left door of your refrigerator.
  5. Remove the bin at the bottom of the door. To do this, lift both sides directly up. The bin should pop out, revealing the water filter compartment.
  6. Swing the right side of the filter out of the compartment.
  7. Turn the filter counterclockwise until it releases.
  8. Clean any spilled water.
  9. Remove the new filter from its packaging, and remove the cap.
  10. Place the new filter into the mount and turn clockwise until it locks in place.
  11. Swing the filter back into place.
  12. Replace the lower door bin.
  13. Turn the water back on.
  14. In 30-second intervals (30 seconds on, 60 seconds off), dispense 2 1/2 gallons of water to clear and prime the filter.
  15. Reset your water filter indicator. Hold the ‘Water Filter’ button for 3 seconds to do this.

Rooftop filters

  1. Turn off the water line to your refrigerator.
  2. Make sure your old filter is completely empty. Do this by dispensing all the remaining water until the flow stops completely.
  3. Place a towel beneath the water dispenser to catch any drips or spills.
  4. Remove the top shelf. Simply tilt the front of the shelf up, lift, and pull it out.
  5. Open the rooftop compartment.
  6. Angle the water filter down. Rotate the filter counterclockwise until it comes loose. Then pull it out.
  7. Remove the new filter from its packaging and remove the cap.
  8. Insert the filter into the manifold. Rotate clockwise until it locks securely into place.
  9. Angle the filter back into the compartment and close the compartment.
  10. Replace the top shelf.
  11. Turn the water back on.
  12. In 30-second intervals (30 seconds on, 60 seconds off), dispense 2 1/2 gallons of water to clear and prime the filter.
  13. Reset your water filter indicator. Hold the ‘Water Filter’ button for 3 seconds to do this.

LT900X3 Filters

*Note: All three water filters should be replaced at the same time.

  1. Turn off the water line to your refrigerator.
  2. Make sure your old filter is completely empty. Do this by dispensing all the remaining water until the flow stops completely.
  3. Place a towel beneath the water dispenser to catch any drips or spills.
  4. Remove the big ‘Fresh Zone’ drawer at the bottom of your refrigerator.
  5. Remove the water filter cover.
  6. Remove the old water filters by turning counterclockwise and pulling them out.
  7. Remove the new filters from their packaging and remove the caps.
  8. Insert the new water filters into the corresponding slots.
  9. Turn each filter clockwise, until it locks into place.
  10. Replace the water filter cover.
  11. Replace the big ‘Fresh Zone’ drawer.
  12. Turn the water back on.
  13. In 30-second intervals (30 seconds on, 60 seconds off), dispense 2 1/2 gallons of water to clear and prime the filter.
  14. Reset your water filter indicator. Hold the ‘Water Filter’ button for 3 seconds to do this.

LT800P

Follow the instructions for the LT1000P above.

LT700P

Follow the instructions for the LT1000P – Rooftop filter section above.

LT600P

  1. Turn off the water line to your refrigerator.
  2. Make sure your old filter is completely empty. Do this by dispensing all the remaining water until the flow stops completely.
  3. Place a towel beneath the water dispenser to catch any drips or spills.
  4. Open the filter compartment by turning the knob counterclockwise. The filter will click out of place. Pull out the filter.
  5. Remove the new filter from its packaging and remove the cap from the O-rings.
  6. Holding the knob in a vertical position, insert the filter into the compartment until it stops. Turn the filter clockwise to lock it into place.
  7. Turn the water back on.
  8. In 30-second intervals (30 seconds on, 60 seconds off), dispense 2 1/2 gallons of water to clear and prime the filter.
  9. Reset your water filter indicator. Hold the ‘Water Filter’ button for 3 seconds to do this.

LT500P

  1. Turn off the water line to your refrigerator.
  2. Make sure your old filter is completely empty. Do this by dispensing all the remaining water until the flow stops completely.
  3. Place a towel beneath the water dispenser to catch any drips or spills.
  4. Remove the top shelf.
  5. Remove the lamp cover by pressing the tab underneath and pulling it out.
  6. Remove the old filter by turning it to the left until the unlock symbol is lined up with the indicator line. Then pull down.
  7. Remove the new filter from its packaging and remove the cap.
  8. Install the new filter by reversing the steps above. Insert the filter with the unlock symbol aligned with the indicator line. Then turn to the right until it locks in place and the lock symbol is aligned with the indicator line.
  9. Replace the lamp cover.
  10. Replace the top shelf.
  11. Turn the water back on.
  12. In 30-second intervals (30 seconds on, 60 seconds off), dispense 2 1/2 gallons of water to clear and prime the filter.
  13. Reset your water filter indicator. Hold the ‘Water Filter’ button for 3 seconds to do this.
