Maytag Washer Agitator Loose or Not Turning Your Clothes? Here Is What Is Going On (Model MVWC415EW1)

If your clothes come out of the wash still dirty or twisted into knots, and the agitator (the tall post in the center of the tub) wobbles, lifts up, or turns without moving the load, you are likely looking at one of two problems. They feel the same from the top of the machine, but the fix is different, so it is worth getting the right one diagnosed before you start pulling parts.

Problem 1: The Agitator Has Come Loose From the Shaft

What you will see:

  • The agitator wiggles, lifts, or pulls up off its post with little effort.
  • It may rock or spin without driving the clothes, so the load barely moves.
  • It is usually quiet. The washer runs its full cycle, but the agitator is no longer locked to the drive shaft.

Why it happens: The agitator sits on a splined drive shaft in the center of the tub and is held down by a retaining bolt under the fabric-softener cap. Over time, the agitator splines or that retaining hardware wear or crack, so the shaft still turns but the agitator no longer grips it.

This is exactly what we found on a Maytag MVWC415EW1 in Patchogue (07/01/2026). The agitator had come loose, so we replaced the agitator (part W10836496) and the small washer that seats on the retaining bolt (part WP3949550), and had it moving clothes again in a single visit.

Problem 2: The Agitator Is Attached, but Nothing Underneath Is Driving It

What you will see:

  • The agitator is firmly seated and does not lift off, but the load still is not moving.
  • The motor runs and the cycle sounds normal, yet clothes come out barely washed.

Why it happens: On this style of Maytag top-loader, the agitator is driven through a drive hub and a shift mechanism beneath the tub that switch the machine between wash and spin. When the drive hub strips its teeth or the shift actuator fails, the motor keeps running but that motion never reaches the agitator.

This one needs a technician to open the machine and confirm whether the drive hub, the shift actuator, or the transmission is the culprit, then replace the worn part. It is not a guess-and-swap repair.

Why You Should Not Keep Running It

  • Your laundry is not actually getting clean, so you are paying for water, power, and detergent for nothing.
  • A loose agitator can crack further, and a dropped retaining bolt or cap can fall into the tub and jam the basket or the pump.
  • Running a worn drive hub or actuator puts extra load on the transmission and gearcase, which can turn a small repair into a larger one.
