In 1934, Sir Woolf Fisher and Maurice Paykel began importing domestic appliances to New Zealand under the business name Fisher & Paykel Industries Ltd. Within a few years they were manufacturing Kelvinator-brand washing machines under license, which gave them their first taste of the production business they’d eventually expand into. By the ‘50s, the company had moved to a specially built factory and begun producing their own line of home appliances.

In the ‘80s, Fisher and Paykel began focusing on research and development, improving both their product and their production facilities.
